Barrhead Men's Shed is a club serving all of East Renfrewshire, where men can come together for a blether, make things, and generally find better ways of spending their time than sitting alone watching daytime television. Barrhead Men's Shed is open to all adults who can contribute to, or benefit from this program.
What happens in a ‘Men’s Shed’? I hear you ask!
Barrhead Men's Shed is primarily here for the health and wellbeing of adult males from around East Renfrewshire. It is important not to do anything which undermines this objective. A Men’s Shed is a larger version of the typical man’s shed in the garden – a place where men can feel at home and pursue practical interests with freedom and independence. See pictures in The "Gallery" section of this website. Barrhead Men’s Shed offers this to members, to share the tools and resources they need to work on projects of their own choosing at their own time and pace and in a safe, friendly and inclusive venue. Barrhead Men's Shed is a place of skills-sharing and informal learning, of individual pursuits and community projects, of purpose, achievement and social interaction. Barrhead Men's Shed in Robertson Street Barrhead offers all these things, we invite both men and women to come along and have a look. See panel opposite for our opening times. There are men's sheds all over the world now. To give you an idea of what sheds are like here is a video about the MacMerry Men's Shed in East Lothian: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OPYuNy0OYNw And here is a video about men's sheds from the 'BBC Breakfast' programme: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2PftugQNkPQ At the time of the Barrhead Men's Shed video recording three other Sheds also had a video recorded. Our shed is open to men and women who live in East Renfrewshire. The shed is a FACILITY rather than a service, which means that we can provide the tools and space for working on projects, and we hope that shedders will always be willing to share their skills and ideas, but we do not provide formal instruction or personal support. We are doing it this way so that the volunteers who run the shed also get time to work on their own projects. Remember that The Shed exists primarily for the health and wellbeing of men in East Renfrewshire. If you do have any health issues that will affect you when you are in the shed you can tell us about them so that we can help you participate in the shed's activities safely. We have developed a guide for people to read if they are thinking about being a member of the shed. You can read it by clicking the link below.
This guide will tell you what you need to know and do if you want to become a member of our shed. Please read it carefully before getting in touch. If you can't see or download the file, let us know.
