Who we are
We are a group of retired local men and women who were looking for something new and interesting to do, somewhere to go, and an opportunity to meet new people. We were offered the chance to visit the fantastic Westhill Men’s Shed in Aberdeen in 2014 and decided there and then that we would set up our own shed here in Barrhead. We have now been in operation for eight years, with our board of Trustees managing the shed’s development and searching for funding grants. We are being supported by East Renfrewshire Community Health and Care Partnership (Health Improvement Team), East Renfrewshire Council. We have received grants over the years from Age Scotland , Scottish Men's Shed Association the National Lottery Community Fund, Barrhead Housing Association and many other organisations who like Barrhead Men's Shed work hard to overcome the loneliness and isolation that often comes with old age and loss of a lifetime partner. Where we are Our 'shed' is based in Units 1-4, 9 Robertson Street, Barrhead. G78 1QW. View our location on the Google Map opposite. The 'contact' page gives you our details. |
How can you support us? You can get involved in the shed in several ways: * you can participate in sessions to share your skills or to learn from others * you can suggest projects the shed members could work on together * you can donate tools and materials to us * you can help publicise the shed through friends, family, neighbours and on facebook and twitter |

What our committee think about the shed:
"We believe that older men and women in Barrhead deserve to be happy, healthy and connected to their communities, with interesting things to do, things they have chosen to do and things which reflect the skills and interests they have.”
“As older people we know we have so much to offer - to each other, to the local community and to the national debate we're having about how we best support and look after one another as we get older.”
“We cannot afford to lose the skills people have spent a lifetime accumulating. The shed is a great way to share these. skills”
“I feel so much better having been involved in the shed, it's given me a sense of purpose I thought I'd lost when I retired.”

THE MEN’S SHED MOVEMENT
There is a worldwide ‘Men’s Shed’ Movement which started in rural Australia, then it spread to Ireland before coming to Scotland. Sheds are larger, communal versions of wee sheds or garages men already have in their gardens. As well as enjoying the camaraderie of being in the shed, learning from each other and completing projects for the benefit of the wider community, sheds also have the potential to be a place where men can talk about their health, and learn about how to make the most of their health. Here’s an excerpt from the Australian Men’s Shed Association website about this:
